Autistic Spectrum Disorders Assessment for Children

At Neurofocus, our autism assessments for children follow best-practice clinical guidelines and are conducted by a multidisciplinary team—led by a Senior Clinical Psychologist alongside either a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) or Occupational Therapist (OT). This collaborative approach ensures a thorough, well-rounded understanding of each child’s unique profile.

What to Expect

Step 1: File Review

We begin with a full review of any existing reports or documentation—including school reports, prior assessments, and service history. This helps us understand your child’s background and any previous concerns.

Step 2: Screening Measures

You’ll be asked to complete screening forms to assess mood, anxiety, attention (ADHD), and other related areas that may impact your child’s presentation.

Step 3: School Information

We gather detailed feedback from your child’s school regarding learning, social interaction, communication, and behaviour in the classroom environment.

Step 4: Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R)

Parents or caregivers take part in a structured developmental interview focused on the child’s early communication, social skills, play, and repetitive behaviours.

Step 5: Autism Diagnostic Observation Session (ADOS)

Your child will participate in a play-based or conversational assessment with a clinician (SLT or OT) to observe communication style, social interaction, and behavioural traits.

Step 6: Adaptive Behaviour Assessment

We assess how your child manages everyday life skills, including communication, socialisation, and independence, to gain a full picture of their functional abilities.

Step 7: Optional Add-Ons (if needed):

If general learning difficulties are suspected, we may include: Cognitive Assessment and/or School Observation
